Day 22 - Camping Out On The Boundaries Of The Kingdom

How easy and natural a thing it is to limit God - to be grateful for small mercies! We come to Jesus and He does for us what He always promised, and everything works out. Our problem is either partially or wholly resolved. To our amazement, if we credit him at all rather than the drift and fortune of surrounding circumstances, things work out.

Then we settle down. We have had our own first-hand and incontrovertible experience of the coming near of the kingdom of God. But, instead of opening the curtains of our soul to the glory of the sunshine so evidently there, instead of being encouraged into a massive growth of faith by what Jesus has just done for us, we slip back into doubt. We cannot believe that there can be anything more, or that he can work in us anything bigger or better.

For some peculiar reason, that first miracle seems to satisfy us, and so we camp for the rest of our life out on the far boundaries of the Kingdom, and never press on to inherit what is there and meant for us.
