Day 30 - Baby Love
Devotion to God really implies some sort of burning affection for him--a yielding of your heart to him with reverence in everything you do, particularly in prayer and meditation.
The more we love a subject, the more devoted we are to it. Devotion can therefore be described as love manifested.
A woman stood At Jesus' feet, weeping and washing them with her tears and wiping them with her hair and kissing them. Is this not a picture of devotion? This is love and devotion expressed in action. Jesus said, "She loved much."
So the secret of devotion is loving. Every devoted Christian longs to be more devoted to God: it is pleasant to sense in our hearts that burning desire to love God more.
Here is a strange thing - a fond mother holds her baby to her bosom; she loves it very much, and her heart is happy in that love; but she feels she could never love it enough. She longs to love the child even more. She looks down at her baby and exclaims, "Oh, I could just eat you!" Her heart yearns to love her baby more, even though today she loves it from the fullness of her soul. In fact it is This longing to love that increases our capacity to love.
To long to be more devotional is not a sign of any lack of devotion in you; but, on the contrary, it is proof of your devotion. Those who are the least devotional have the least desire to be more devotional. The heart that is fullest of love is happiest; and although it is happy and satisfied, yet it longs to move.
Oh, how we long to throw our arms more tightly around him! how we long to have him throw his arms more tightly around us! how we long to nestle more closely and lovingly on his bosom!
